Weekly Blog (April 24 – 30)

This week’s update covers this past weekend’s Premier League action.

It went from being one of the driest premier league match days on Saturday to a thrilling Sunday of score lines.

The biggest moment of the weekend saw Sunderland relegated from the Premier League after a ten year spell in the top flight. The Black Cats luck finally ran out after David Moyes’ struggled to get any inspiration from his players. Jermain Defoe was their star man this season, but his goals alone could not prevent the Sunderland’s doomed fate. They ended their fight for survival with a whimper as they were already relying on Hull City’s result to ensure they were safe until next weekend. Sunderland ended up losing a contentious match against Bournemouth 0-1 thanks to Josh King’s 88th minute winner. While the Cherries clinched their safety, Sunderland went down as Hull City’s Jakupovic saved a Southampton penalty to grab a point for the Tigers. Hull are still safe following their late heroics at St Mary’s stadium.

Other score lines this weekend saw league-leaders Chelsea down Everton by three goals to nil and Manchester United draw at home against Swansea City 1-1.

Perhaps the most exciting match of the weekend saw relegation-fighting Middleborough take on Champions League hopefuls Manchester City at the Riverside. The game took off when Alvaro Negredo opened the scoring the 38th minute. The Spaniard put one past his former club and Middleborough were on the front foot after that. However, that momentum would halt after Manchester City were awarded a contentious penalty as Sane flopped in the box and Aguero tucked home the spot kick. With the scores level, Middleborough rallied back at City and took the lead again on 77 minutes when Calum Chambers struck in the box to slot past Caballero. City would get a late equalizer through Gabriel Jesus’ header and the scores ended honors even at 2-2.

The North London derby ended in a two nil victory for Spurs. Delle Alli and Harry Kane were on the mark for Tottenham as Arsenal’s problems continued. The title race has continued to heat up and Arsenal’s chances of being in the Champions League next year are looking slim.

That’s all we have for you this week! Check in next week for more football coverage!
