Weekly Blog (January 29-February 5)
This weeks current events have been a whirlwind of interesting international issues. Donald Trump's recent executive order that bans travel to seven specific Muslim-majority countries was blocked by Federal Judge on Friday, February 3rd. This ban was an issue for International athletes as many people have been sent back to those seven countries as they did not have citizenship in the United States. Even people holding work visas had to be sent home among the chaos that ensued. Trump's administration then decided to request a reinstatement of the travel ban and were completely denied once again by the US Federal Appeals Court. Trump's vision for America has firm resistance after many protests across the country against many of the executive orders he has signed since becoming President of the United States.
This travel ban has only really had an impact in the United States, being seen as an act of discrimination against Muslims. However, a Muslim-majority country made it to the final of the African Cup of Nations. Egypt made it to the final of the biggest sports tournament on the continent of Africa. They ended the tournament in the bitter disappointment however; losing out to Cameroon after a late-winning goal from Aboubakar. This was Cameroon's first title since 2002 and they ended an impressive 24 match unbeaten run by the Egyptians.
Although the recent actions of the US President have angered many people across the globe, the world has in fact kept spinning. The future for Muslim people, specifically Muslim-Americans, looks to be improving with the recent rulings of Federal Judges. Lets hope that we continue to see diversity, freedom and justice continue to prosper in the United States and around the world.
